Amityville 3-D
After discussing the 2019 The Dawn, 2018 The Amityville Murders, the 1979 The Amityville Horror, the 2005 remake and the
1982 Amityville II: The Possession, my study on the Amityville Horror saga
moves on.
Task actually completed. I have already
found 3 missing puzzle pieces to plug into the opening of The Conjuring 2.
I am not sure how far would this adventure can or should go. As anyone can make
their own movie under the name “Amityville”, I don’t think I will dig myself
into every bit of those Amityville crap.
Next movie I want to bring up is the 1983 Amityville
3-D. But I don’t want to repeat the plot here. If you have never watched the
movie, watch it, or read the spoiler on Wikipedia.
Most of the comments on this movie are
moderate to bad. But I quite like it. Not only because of Meg Ryan but also the
storyline.
The “3-D’ in the movie name does not mean the
third Amityville movie. It means 3-dimension, a hit at the time of production. Because
of a law suit, movie poster emphases that the movie is not a prequel or
sequel to anything. But let me put this straight. IT IS. Amityville 3-D
is a sequel. The DeFeo killings and the house being built on top of an Indian
burial ground are mentioned in the movie.
How to place it in the Amityville Horror saga
timeline depends on whether you treat Amityville II: The Possession a
sequel or a prequel. I will call that a sequel. So this movie should be placed after
Amityville II: The Possession. However, there are a few points that
contradict with the timeline. Yes, this is unavoidable as Amityville Horror saga is only a loose franchise and different movies are made by different bosses.
First, the secret red brick room in the basement is missing. In the 1979 classic, the room is merely shown and called as “the entrance to the Hell”. The 2018 The Amityville Murders tried to shape itself as a prequel to the classic, further elaborate the room is the location where Ronald DeFeo Jr. woke up the ancient sprits while performing séance inside. In Amityville II: The Possession, the room deteriorates into a swamp with flies coming out. But in this movie, the room became a well.
Second, the demon is no longer in a pig
shape. It became … well, I don’t know how to call this thing.
The movie also causes a big problem to the whole saga. The Amityville house blown up at the end of the movie! This is not factual, for sure. In reality, the Amityville house is still in good shape. But this plot caused big trouble to the universe of Amityville Horror saga. It forbids any further movies featuring the same house placing after it in the timeline.
Problem immediately happened in the next movie, which I am going to write about
that in the next post.
