02-009 Qwixx

Qwixx

A good game should have a combination of luck and strategy. Dice rolling has a tendency to the former. How to add strategies into a dice game is always an interesting topic. Roll-and-write is a simple approach to convert a dice game from pure luck to a game with some decision makings.

Qwixx is an example of simple roll-and-write dice game. It is created by a German designer Steffen Benndorf. US game manufacturer Gamewright discovered this game at the Essen game fair in Germany and brought it to the states. The version I bought from Amazon is from Gamewright. If you are from Europe, you will find the same game from a different manufacturer.

Qwixx

The game has very simple components. It contains 6 standard d6 dice, 2 in white colour, 1 in red, 1 in yellow, 1 in green and 1 in blue. It also comes with 100 pieces of score sheets and instructions. That’s all inside the box.

Simple components do not lower down the excitement of the game. Game play is also easy. Just roll some dice and, depending on what you rolled, cross out some numbers on the score sheet. But which number to cross out relies on your wisdom.

Additional score sheets are available from Gamewright. It is also widely available on internet. But you need a colour printer to print them out.

Children do not like games with simple components. They like games with lot of cute graphics, such as Mario Monopoly or Doraemon UNO. But my mum like this game.
