Starting from the 2013, James Wan’s The Conjuring Universe, a.k.a. The Conjuring-verse, started expanding and become one of the most famous horror movie franchise. Now there are 8 movies, with the 9^th under filming and the 10^th under development. In addition, there are 5 short films and a comic book series also fall into this universe. There are also plans of bringing the Conjuring-verse to the small screen.

The Conjuring Universe

We all know that The Conjuring-verse is about Ed & Lorraine Warren. And many attribute it to James Wan. But this is only a causal way of saying and is far from accurate.

The Conjuring Universe vs. The Warrens

The Conjuring-verse is a dramatization of the real-life cases of Ed & Lorraine Warren. For sure, the Warrens is the core of the franchise but the Conjuring-verse goes much further than that. For example, The Curse of La Llorona is based on the Latin American folklore, which is nothing related to the Warrens. Besides, as in many other so-called “movies based on real cases”, a huge amount of Hollywood creation has been added to the franchise. Which means the stories told by the movies can be very far away from the actual cases.

Furthermore, Ed & Lorraine Warren claimed they have involved in around 10,000 cases throughout their career. The Conjuring-verse has only adapted a few of them, mainly the most famous ones. There are still plenty of cases not being adapted by The Conjuring-verse.

Finally, the franchise belongs to New Line Cinema, not James Wan. James only heavily involved in it. He is not the owner.

In short, the Warrens is only a (major) part of the franchise and the franchise is only a (minor) part of the Warrens. This chapter is about the Warrens. But because The Conjuring-verse is at present the biggest media franchise of the Warrens, I will discuss it as a whole.

The Conjuring Universe timeline

I recommend to watch the 8 movies in chronical order. Yes, it is different from their release order. To watch them chronically, you should follow this order:

5. Annabelle Comes Home
6. The Curse of La Llorona
7. The Conjuring 2
8. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

All 8 movies are connected. Also watch the shorts. Technically, they are parts of the universe although filmed by amateurs. The shorts are available on YouTube and I put links below. It only takes you 10 minutes to watch.

How many Warren cases are covered by The Conjuring Universe?

The 8 movies covered 5 of the Warren cases, as follow:

• Annabelle (Annabelle: Creation, Annabelle, Annabelle Comes Home)
• Perron family (The Conjuring)
• Amityville (The Conjuring 2)
• Enfield poltergeist (The Conjuring 2)
• Arne Johnson (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It)

Compare to the total number of 10,000 claimed cases, this seems to be a small number. But all these cases are the most famous ones. Wikipedia only listed out 9 notable investigations. This franchise covered more than 50% of them already.
