03-018 Other screen adaptations of the Warrens

03-018
Other screen adaptations of the Warrens

Until there is another installment in The Conjuring Universe, this post will be the last of “The Warrens” chapter. In this post, I will round it up with the other lesser screen adaptations of the Warrens. And they are all appearing on the small screen.

The real life demonologist couple Ed and Lorraine Warren have investigated in more than a thousand of paranormal cases throughout their career. And any of their cases can be dramatized into screen adaptations. In previous posts, we have seen their notable investigations being adapted into movies, TV films, TV miniseries or TV episode. Now, we are going to look into other TV episodes which also contain dramatization of their cases.

Note: I will skip all those talk shows, interviews or documentaries. Only TV shows with dramatized parts are included.

A Haunting

A Haunting, produced by Discovery Channel

A Haunting is an American paranormal drama anthology television series aired on Discovery Channel from 2002. The series depict eyewitness accounts of alleged possession, exorcism, and ghostly encounters. Apart from the first special episode “A Haunting in Connecticut”, a dramatization of the “Snedeker house haunting”, which we have talked about, there are at least 4 more episodes adapted cases investigated by the Warrens.

"Hell House" (Season 1, Episode 1)

Lorraine (left) and the medium Lee

The episode is about a reported haunting in a 19th century house in the 89 Buckingham Road, Seymour, Connecticut. The Warrens were dramatized by unknown artists and Lorraine Warren herself appeared in the show as an interviewee.

"Where Demons Dwell" (Season 2, Episode 4)

Ed and Lorraine Warren, questioning the demon

This episode is actually an adaptation of the trail of “Arnie Cheyenne Johnson”. But the plotline is greatly alerted. The trail is totally not mentioned in the episode and no one died in the show. So, it is the “Demon Murder Case” without the murder and the case, only the demon!

Anyway, The real life Arnie Johnson, his wife and Lorraine Warrens appeared in the show as interviewees. And Shirley Vaughn returned as Lorraine and Kevin Clay as Ed.

“The Dark Side” (Season 3, Episode 10)

The Warrens assisting the priest for a exorcism

This episode was dedicated to the memory of Ed, who died in 2006. It talks about a haunting experience in a historical house in New England. This time, we saw Ralph Denton Sr. returned as Ed and a new face for Lorraine, Margarette Strom. Real life Lorraine Warren also appeared in the show.

"Monster in the Apartment" (Season 4, Episode 12)

The Warrens did not appear in the drama part but Lorraine appeared in an interview

Haunting moved to an apartment in Edmonton, Canada. The Warrens were not dramatized in the show. They only appeared on the other side of the phone. But real life Lorraine Warren appeared in the show to discuss the haunting.

The Warrens are very famous and many TV shows have featured their investigations. But meanwhile that’s all I can find. I will leave the post open and will add more TV episodes here if I can find more. Thank you.

華倫夫婦「狼人」事件補完計劃

Note: This post is written in Cantonese and there is no translation of it.

03-016 Notable investigations not yet dramatized

Notable investigations not yet dramatized

The real life demonologist couple Ed and Lorraine Warren have investigated in more than a thousand of paranormal cases throughout their career. Any of their cases can be dramatized into a movie or a TV program. Wikipedia has listed out 9 notable investigations of the Warrens.

In the previous posts, we have seen 7 of those cases were already dramatized. Some of them were even dramatized for more than once. Below is a complete list:

But there are still 2 notable investigations that have not been dramatized yet, the “Union Cemetery” investigation & the “Werewolf” investigation.

Details of “Union Cemetery” & “Werewolf” investigations
can be found in the books written by Ed Warren

We do not know how The Conjuring Universe will be expanded in the future. Up to the time of writing, there was never ever any failure in The Conjuring Universe. It is the most profitable horror movie franchise at present. The market has a high expectation to see more Conjuring movies coming out. So maybe in just a few years, we would see the remaining 2 investigations also being dramatized and we can see Patrick Wilson fighting with Bill Ramsey on the big screen. We never know!

However, while waiting for the Conjuring-verse to expand, are there any substitutes that we can watch or listen to at the moment? The answer is yes. I found 2 podcasts that covered both investigations.

"Union Cemetery"

"Werewolf"

The podcasts are very good. They are very detailed and I like the voice of the podcasters. I am not a native English speaker but I can understand every single word of what they said without reading any subtitle. I highly recommend listening those while we wait for James Wan.

03-015 Amityville The Awakening

03-015
Amityville The Awakening

When I started looking into the Amityville Horror saga, “Amityville Horror Wiki” is the first few pages I refer myself to. I started learning from there the basic idea of this special, funny and totally out of control “franchise”. I got a list of movies which are so-called “Theatrical Films Canon”, and how many of them show some continuities. Then I started collecting those movies and ready for my horror movie adventure.

“Amityville Horror Wiki” suggested 7 movies as the “Theatrical Films Canon”: 1979 The Amityville Horror, 1982 AmityvilleII: The Possession, the 2005 remake, 2018 The Amityville Murders, 1993 Amityville 3-D, 2017 Amityville The Awakening & 2019 TheAmityville Dawn. I went one step further to watch the 1989 Amityville 4 The Evil Escapes, as it follows the official “novel” series.

Today, I am going to talk about the last in “Theatrical Films Canon”, the 2017 Amityville The Awakening.

Movie poster of Amityville The Awakening

Only premiered in 2017, this movie is quite new, I think you may still have a chance to watch it if you haven’t. So, I put the word “Spoilers warning” below.  Don’t worry, I won’t spoil too much.

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

At the beginning of the movie, we saw a family moving into the infamous house in Amityville and, things started happening. The movie gives a time, 2014. It connects very well to the Amityville Horror saga timeline.

Hey, didn’t the house being blown up at the end of Amityville 3-D? Hold on, I will explain.

Amityville The Awakening does not connect itself to the beginning of other movies, like a prequel. It also does not connect itself to the end of other movies, like a sequel. It connects itself on top of other movies.

Amityville The Awakening happens in the “real world”. In the movie, the DeFeo killings are real. Lutz family is real. The Warrens should be real, but not mentioned. And the evil inside the house… well, you watch it. But the previous movies are only “movies” here.

It is more like the idea of Wes Craven's New Nightmare. In the movie, the elder daughter of the family met a guy called Terrance in her new school and Terrance brought out a DVD of the 1979 The Amityville Horror and suggested to watch it inside the very house.

This is how the movie works out

Now, you know how it works out. No explanation is needed for the blown up house, or the differences between the classic and the remake, or whether the house is really clean after Amityville 4. These are all movies. You find contradictions? Talk to their directors. Under the same concept, Valak from The Conjuring Universe should also be “a movie plot” only.

Rating of this movie is generally good. But to be honest, I don’t like this idea. It keeps my head aching for hours after watching.

Spoilers end.

This post will probably be the last on Amityville. So, let me summarize the timeline of the Amityville Horror saga.

  • 2019 The Dawn
  • 2018 The Amityville Murders
  • 1979 The Amityville Horror
  • 2016 The Conjuring 2
  • 1982 Amityville II: The Possessions
  • 1989 Amityville 4 The Evil Escapes (optional)
  • 1983 Amityville 3-D
  • 2017 Amityville: The Awakening

I am taking the theory of Amityville II: The Possession as a sequel and placing Amityville 3-D after Amityville 4 The Evil Escapes as the house blown up at the end of Amityville 3-D.

You can consider The Conjuring 2 is a cross-over between The Conjuring Universe and Amityville Horror saga. Just like Alien vs. Predator. Both creatures met together and they did things. Then they separated and continued to have their own stories. The Warrens went to Amityville, did something, and left, together with Valak. If you want to learn more on the Amityville story, watch those movies. Or if you are happy, you can just leave it like this. You won’t find the Warrens in those Amityville movies anyway.

03-014 Amityville 4 The Evil Escapes

03-014
Amityville 4 The Evil Escapes

Okay, now it comes the 1989 Amityville 4 The Evil Escapes. This is my seventh Amityville movie and the first low budget TV movie in the list. And things start coming out of track from here.

Movie poster of Amityville 4 The Evil Escapes

At the beginning of the movie, a real estate agent escorted a group of priests to try blessing the … you know where. Blessing is semi-successful only, with a priest ended up in a hospital, but at least the house is finally clean, well, according to the priest leader Father Manfred.

Things certainly did not end here. The demon ended up possessed a lamp. And eventually, someone bought the lamp and send it to the other side of America. Story then shifted from the Atlantic to the Pacific!

This kind of possessed stuffs concept actually goes endless. We saw this idea keeps repeating in many of the following movies. We had a lamp here and later on we saw a clock, a mirror, a dollhouse, some woods, a toy monkey, a painting and, just before the end of 2020, we had a used, second-hand vibrator! I definitely will not watch all these movies. No way! I won’t do this! Never!

All the first 9 movies, including this one, are considered as the canon of the Amityville Horror saga. I don’t know what is the stand point of this statement as I already see things start getting wrong just in the 4th installment.

At the end of Amityville 3-D, the house was blown up. But in Amityville 4 The Evil Escapes, we again see the house in a good shape. No explanation was given. The only way to fit this movie into the existing timeline is to place it before Amityville 3-D.

Would this make sense? Yes, a bit. At the beginning of Amityville 4 The Evil Escapes, we saw the house full of furniture. We can assume those were the leftovers from the Lutz, if you consider Amityville II: The Possession is a prequel, or from the Montelli, if you consider it is a sequel. Then it came the yard sales and the house was emptied for the Baxter to move it. However, this would mean Father Manfred was wrong. The house is not clean.

Amityville 4 The Evil Escapes (1989) | Horror Film Wiki | Fandom -
https://horror.fandom.com/wiki/Amityville_4:_The_Evil_Escapes_(1989)

Other problem is the year of filming. Amityville 3-D does not give a date. We can only assume the story took place in its present time, i.e. 1983. But Amityville 4 The Evil Escapes did give a date. In one of the dialogue between Father Manfred and Father Dennis Kibbler, the DeFeo killing was mentioned as happened 12 years ago.

A dozen years ago ...
evil was simply a concept in my mind.
That house in Amityville
has changed that concept to reality ...
forever.

For three hundred years ...
no one has lived on that ground
without tragic consequences.

In recent, 1974, boy murdered his
entire family, because the voices
in the house told him to do it.

A dozen years ago I would've thought
that, what you saw on that lamp ...
was a hallucination brought on by fear.

Now ...
Now I believe ...
that the evil in that house
could transmigrated to that lamp.
That it can and will transmigrate
into another object ...
or another house ...
or another person ...
at the earliest opportunity.

Amityville 4 The Evil Escapes Movie Script (scripts.com) -
https://www.scripts.com/script.php?id=amityville_4%3A_the_evil_escapes_2742&p=6

This set Amityville 4 The Evil Escapes in 1986, 3 years before its production. So to fit everything in, we need to push the story of Amityville 3-D 3 years backward. This is not totally unconvincing. 3 year is not a long time. We just need to assume that no one in the Amityville 3-D movie has ever bought any new stuffs for that 3 years.

03-013 Amityville 3-D

03-013
Amityville 3-D

After discussing the 2019 The Dawn, 2018 The Amityville Murders, the 1979 The Amityville Horror, the 2005 remake and the 1982 Amityville II: The Possession, my study on the Amityville Horror saga moves on.

Task actually completed. I have already found 3 missing puzzle pieces to plug into the opening of The Conjuring 2. I am not sure how far would this adventure can or should go. As anyone can make their own movie under the name “Amityville”, I don’t think I will dig myself into every bit of those Amityville crap.

Movie poster of Amityville 3-D

Next movie I want to bring up is the 1983 Amityville 3-D. But I don’t want to repeat the plot here. If you have never watched the movie, watch it, or read the spoiler on Wikipedia.

Most of the comments on this movie are moderate to bad. But I quite like it. Not only because of Meg Ryan but also the storyline.

The “3-D’ in the movie name does not mean the third Amityville movie. It means 3-dimension, a hit at the time of production. Because of a law suit, movie poster emphases that the movie is not a prequel or sequel to anything. But let me put this straight. IT IS. Amityville 3-D is a sequel. The DeFeo killings and the house being built on top of an Indian burial ground are mentioned in the movie.

Meg Ryan in the Amityville house

How to place it in the Amityville Horror saga timeline depends on whether you treat Amityville II: The Possession a sequel or a prequel. I will call that a sequel. So this movie should be placed after Amityville II: The Possession. However, there are a few points that contradict with the timeline. Yes, this is unavoidable as Amityville Horror saga is only a loose franchise and different movies are made by different bosses.

First, the secret red brick room in the basement is missing. In the 1979 classic, the room is merely shown and called as “the entrance to the Hell”. The 2018 The Amityville Murders tried to shape itself as a prequel to the classic, further elaborate the room is the location where Ronald DeFeo Jr. woke up the ancient sprits while performing séance inside. In Amityville II: The Possession, the room deteriorates into a swamp with flies coming out. But in this movie, the room became a well.

The red brick room became a well in Amityville 3-D

Second, the demon is no longer in a pig shape. It became … well, I don’t know how to call this thing.

What exactly is this thing?

The movie also causes a big problem to the whole saga. The Amityville house blown up at the end of the movie! This is not factual, for sure. In reality, the Amityville house is still in good shape. But this plot caused big trouble to the universe of Amityville Horror saga. It forbids any further movies featuring the same house placing after it in the timeline.

If you don't want anyone else to build from your success, blow it up!

Problem immediately happened in the next movie, which I am going to write about that in the next post.

03-012 Amityville II: The Possession

03-012
Amityville II: The Possession

Let us move on. After finding 3 missing puzzles for the opening scene of The Conjuring 2, one may wonder could other movies in the Amityville Horror saga also fit.

Since the classic The Amityville Horror premiered 4 decades ago, we have seen more than 30 movies carrying the name “Amityville” floating around in the market. Most of them are low budget direct-to-video releases and only loosely connected to the saga. But still, some movies like the 2018 The Amityville Murders, are loyal to the killing.

Movie poster of Amityville II: The Possession

The 1982 Amityville II: The Possession is another loyal example. A family moved into the very house in Amityville. Then the demon possessed the elder son, driving him to kill his entire family using a shotgun. Storyline is similar to the DeFeo killing, right? In fact, Amityville II: The Possession is technically a prequel to The Amityville Horror.

Comments on this movie are generally poor. I agree, especially when seeing the killer son Sonny having incestuous sex with his sister. Sonny was possessed and it is reasonable to see him acting demonic. But his sister was not. She agreed to the intercross just because his brother called her beautiful? That doesn’t make any sense to me at all!

Supposed to be a prequel of the 1979 classic, many said that it should be a sequel instead. They have their reasons.

First, due to legal entity, the movie dropped the DeFeo name and invented a name called Montelli. One of the DeFeo children was completely absent from the movie. At the killing night, none of the family members were killed on their beds. Furthermore, at the end of the movie, the priest Father Adamsky was possessed by the demon and, without telling what happened next, the movie suddenly ended there. All these caused trouble to connect this movie to the 1979 classic or to the 2005 remake.

The movie did not give a date. But we saw a Sony Walkman as the media for possession. Sony only rolled out their first Walkman in year 1979. That means the movie is not possible to take place anytime earlier than The Amityville Horror. I support the sequel claim.

How to explain the similarity to the DeFeo killing if Amityville II: The Possession is a sequel to The Amityville Horror instead of a prequel?

A newspaper clipping in The Amityville Murders may give us an answer to that. In one scene of The Amityville Murders, Butch’s sister, Allison DeFeo, found a wooden box in her grandma’s bedroom. Inside the box, there is a newspaper clipping mentioned a family mass murder had happened in the Amityville house before her family moved in. The name of the previous owner is Moynahan.

Newspaper clipping found by Allison DeFeo in The Amityville Murders

To align everything together, we can assume history keeps repeating itself. It happened first to the Moynahan family, then to the DeFeo, after that to the Lutz, and now it is Montelli’s turn.

How about connection with The Conjuring 2? Wasn’t the Amityville house possessed by Valak in The Conjuring Universe?

Remember the Warrens only met Valak in Amityville but did nothing until they have reached Enfield, London in 1977. So there was a total one year gap for more possessions to happen in that very house. Also, it seems that Valak was only following the Warrens and never stayed in any fix location. This is why we again saw Valak in London.

The demon in Amityville II: The Possession is a pig!

According to the settings of the Amityville Horror saga, the house was built on ancient Indian burial ground, there should be more than 1 unrestingly spirits inside. All these reasons leave plenty of rooms for this movie to fit into the storyline, though it is not a good movie at all.

03-011 The Amityville Horror

03-011
The Amityville Horror

After trying to fit 2 indie horror movies, the 2019 The Dawn & 2018 The Amityville Murders, into the open port at the beginning of The Conjuring 2, it is time to come to the masterpiece.

Posters of the classic 1979 The Amityville Horror and its 2005 remake

The Amityville Murders ends with a real estate agent showing a couple the very house in Amityville, 1 year after the killing. Their names were George and Kathy, the Lutz. 2 movies cover their story afterwards, the classic 1979 The Amityville Horror and the 2005 remake.

The ending of the 2018 The Amityville Murders

Background of both movies is the same. The Lutz moved into the house but fled 28 days after, claiming being encountered with supernatural forces. The Warrens only arrived weeks after they have fled the house. However, storylines of both movies are quite difference. Which one would fit with The Conjuring Universe better? I begin with the remake.

1979 The Amityville Horror vs. 2005 The Amityville Horror

I always use Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings as the dividing range between modern day and yesteryear movies. Most likely because of the innovation on CG, movies produced after the millennia always give people a modern feeling.

Overall feeling of the 2005 remake matches very well with other movies in The Conjuring Universe. The remake is almost a decade older than the others but they all belong to the same generation. Watch it and you will agree that it is a modern movie. However, maybe because it is a remake, the story writer wanted to distinguish it from the 1979 classic. The storyline was alerted a lot and moved far away from factual.

First, the house is in a different address. Lutz’s children names are changed. George Lutz is much more violence in the remake and even killed his dog. But the main problem is on Chelsea Lutz. In the remake, she had an imaginary friend Jodie, who is actually the youngest daughter of the DeFeo’s. In the remake, Jodie was killed by Butch DeFeo inside a closet. But the true Jodie is not a girl. He is a boy. And he was killed on his bed, same as the other family members.

In The Conjuring 2, Lorraine met the ghosts
of the DeFeo children in the basement of the Amityville house.

This very part contradicts with The Conjuring 2. The Conjuring 2 did not mention the exact address of the house or the details of the Lutz or the DeFeo families. But it did show Ronald DeFeo shotting his youngest brothers on their beds. And when Lorraine followed Valak to the basement, there is a scene showing the ghosts of the 4 DeFeo children, which include 2 older girls and 2 younger boys. They all have wounds on their chests, not on their head.

The beginning of the classic 1979 The Amityville Horror

The original 1979 The Amityville Horror follows the fact more. Movie starts with the DeFeo killings. The DeFeo family, father, mother, 2 sisters and 2 brothers were all killed on their beds. Lutz’s youngest daughter also has an imaginary friend called Jody. But Jody is in a form of a pig. Clearly, it is a demon. This setting fits with The Conjuring 2 better.

The ending of the 2005 The Amityville Horror

The ending of the 1979 The Amityville Horror

Another problem is at the ending of the remake. At the end of the remake, it said the Lutz has “never returned for their personal possession”, leaving not much room to have the Warrens sitting together with them in the same house again. The 1979 classic only said they “never reclaimed their house and their personal belongings”. It did not rule out the possibility of seeing them going back to the house for a final time together with the Warrens.

Scene from the 2017 Annabelle: Creation?
No, it is from the 1979 The Amityville Horror.
I am pretty sure James Wan must have watched this classic
before creating The Conjuring-verse.

More details also show the classic 1979 The Amityville Horror align with The Conjuring Universe better. For example, we can see Annabelle in the movie.

However, fitting a yesteryear movie into a modern era movie universe needs to add a bit of salt to make them harmonize. A modern movie with story background set in the 70s, is different from a movie that was actually shotted in the 70s. You can feel their differences. 2005 is not a distant past. Although 35mm negative is still widely used in those days, background processing and editing had all been shifted to digital. CG was also quite advance at that time. Pictures of the 2005 remake fits better in The Conjuring Universe. But storyline should come first. I will pick the 1979 classic as the missing puzzle piece.

The 1979 classic vs the 2005 remake
From the lighting and the shotting angle, you can tell the difference.

How about connecting with The Dawn and The Amityville Murders?

Both The Dawn and The Amityville Murders are indie movies. Their production companies have no relationship with each other or with The Amityville Horror or the remake. The only common ground between these movies are that they all based on the same so-called true story. Contradictions are expected if we try to link these movies together to form a saga.

Fortunately, we can see the later movies were trying to shape themselves to link with the originals. And that worked out very well.

First, let us look into The Amityville Murders. I found that this movie tried to shape itself to link with the classic 1979 The Amityville Horror more. The main reason is the secret red-brick room in the basement. The same room can be found in the 1979 classic. But in the 2005 remake, the room was not mentioned. Instead, the “room” changed to a dungeon in the remake.

Butch's sketchbook in The Amityville Murders

Another evidence is Butch’s sketchbook. In the 2005 remake, Jodie appeared as a girl. But in the 1979 classic, Jody is in a pig form, a demon. In The Amityville Murders, Butch also wrote the word "PIG" in his notebook, together with other satanic symbols. All these shows the 2018 The Amityville Murders fits with the 1979 The Amityville Horror better.

Rev. Jeremiah Ketchum is spelled as "Ketcham" in the remake

The Dawn uses Rev. Jeremiah Ketchum to link itself to Amityville. But there are some problems. In the remake, Rev. Jeremiah Ketchum was clearly referenced but the spelling is a bit different. It is Ketcham instead of Ketchum.

In the 1979 classic, it shows "The Ketchum House"

In the original 1979 classic, the movie only showed a picture called “The Ketchum House”. And one of the character in the movie, Carolyn, called him John Ketchum, not Jeremiah.

Jeremiah should be a person living in the 17th century

Except the Jeremiah in The Dawn is an undead,
or else he could not appear in year 1932.

An even bigger problem is the active years of Ketchum. He is a person living in the era of "Salem witch trials". He could not appear in year 1932 in Pennsylvania.

Anyway, as I said before, we need a bit of salt to get things harmonizing with each other. As a conclusion, we can link up the movies in this way:

  • 2019 The Dawn
  • 2018 The Amityville Murders
  • 1979 The Amityville Horror
  • 2016 The Conjuring 2

03-010 The Amityville Murders

03-010
The Amityville Murders

At the beginning of The Conjuring 2, we saw Ed and Lorraine Warren appeared in the infamous Amityville haunted house, performing a séance. No further details were given of what was done there. In an interview, James said “I … didn’t want to make another Amityville movie… I don’t think I have anything new to tell.”

The Conjuring Universe has opened a port to allow “Amityville Horror” movies to plug in. In the previous post, I have introduced an almost unheard indie horror movie The Dawn into the universe. Today, I am going to look into another indie horror movie. It is premiered in 2018, one year before The Dawn. And the name is The Amityville Murders.

Movie poster of The Amityville Murders

What is this movie about?

As its poster stated, this movie is based on true events. It honestly reproduced the infamous Amityville killing that happened on the 13th November, 1974. In that very night, the eldest son of the DeFeo family, Ronald “Butch” DeFeo Jr. killed all of his 6 family members including his father Ronald DeFeo Sr., his mother Louise, his 2 sisters Dawn and Allison, and his 2 younger brothers Marc and John “Jody” Matthew, with a shotgun. All victims were found face down in their beds with no signs of struggles, giving an unexplainable reason of why no one woke up by the loud noise and ever tried to escape. That further leads to an abundant of imaginations on supernatural involvement.

The movie reassembles the Amityville house very well

Apart from historical facts, the movie also focuses on the relationship between the killer Butch and his family, trying to rationalize the killing. For sure, no one knows the truth behind, but the assumption is quite decent. Hollywood creations were also added to support the super nature claims – the house is built on ancient Indian burial grounds, ancient sprits were waken up through seances, etc. These sound quite “conjuring”, don’t they?

Am I over sensitive?
I was a bit allergic when hearing the word "Conjuration" in this movie.

Comments on this movie are generally negative. Many said the movie is boring. Others said it went away from facts. Some also complain on the CG.

Maybe this is one of my first “Amityville” movies, I think it is quite good. First, acting is good. We saw actors from the 1982 Amityville II: The Possession coming back. Diane Franklin is the mother and Burt Young is the granddad. The Amityville Murders does not a part of the Amityville Horror saga canon. But I saw that it tried very hard to tie itself to the previous movies.

The story behind is well known but that is not a reason to conclude a movie as boring. Everyone knows Titanic has sunk to the bottom of the ocean. But we all flocked to watch the movie, didn’t we? This movie is not a documentary. Parts of it ought to be fictional. And the production companies are not any big bosses. Can’t we give them some grace?

Does The Amityville Murders fit into The Conjuring Universe?

Yes, it fits. Very well indeed. First, the movie is quite factual. Real names are used. At the beginning of The Conjuring 2, we saw the Warrens sitting together with the Lutz family in the dining room of the Amityville house. Haunting incident involving the Lutz family is only the second part of the story, which was dramatized in the classic movie The Amityville Horror and its 2005 remake. The Amityville Murders explains the first part of the story.

Also, as a movie filmed in 2018, it matches the genres of other movies in The Conjuring Universe. I think the director has also seen the open portal in The Conjuring 2 and shaped his movie to fit in. By the way, The Amityville Murders was produced by the same production team of The Haunting in Connecticut. It seems to me that they have finally realized kicking the Warrens out of their first movie was a mistake and wanted to join the “game” again.

How does The Amityville Murders connects with The Dawn?

Both are independent movies made by different companies. Both movies were not written to connect to each other but to The Amityville Horror.

The ending of the movie

At the end of The Amityville Murders, we saw a real estate agents showing the Amityville house to a couple, presumably they are the Lutz’s. And The Dawn uses Jeremiah Ketchum as the link. The demon left Rose and followed Jeremiah to Amityville, causing all the chaos, including the hauntings on the DeFeo and the Lutz families.

In the next post, I will look into the classic, The Amityville Horror from 1979 and its 2005 remake. Let us see how these movies connect with The Dawn, The Amityville Murders & The Conjuring Universe.
