03-006 The Haunting in Connecticut, a Warrens movie without the Warrens

03-006
The Haunting in Connecticut, a Warrens movie without the Warrens

After going through The Conjuring Universe and 2 older TV movies The Haunted (1991) and The Demon Murder Case (1983), let us move on to something newer, a TV episode "A Haunting in Connecticut" and its feature film remake (sort of) The Haunting in Connecticut.

A Haunting in Connecticut is the first 1.5 hour long special episode of the American paranormal drama anthology television series A Haunting, aired on Discovery Channel in 2002. This TV series depict eyewitness accounts of alleged possession, exorcism, and ghostly encounters.

This first episode of the series featured the Warrens. Technically, 1.5 hour is already the length of a featured film. But it is not a pure dramatization of a Warren case. The TV series feature dramatic re-enactments as well as narrations and interviews, which also serves as a documentary.

As mentioned in the previous post, Wikipedia has only listed out 9 notable investigations of the Warrens. And 6 of them were already gotten their movie adaptations. This TV episode is a dramatization of the 7th one, the “Snedeker house haunting”.

The Warrens were dramatized in the episode. Ralph Denton Sr. acted as Ed Warren and Shirley Vaughn acted as Lorraine. The real life Lorraine also appeared in the episode as one of the interviewee.

As the program is also a documentary, the storyline follows closely with the real case. The program is available on YouTube and I put link below. TV in 2002 is still in low resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio, so please bear with the video quality.

7 years later, we saw another attempt on dramatizing the same investigation. But this time, it is on the big screen. A Hollywood movie The Haunting in Connecticut premiered in the US, UK, and Canada in March 2009, and then moved on to worldwide premiere in the following months. Despite the overall average to negative critics, the movie did managed to make a success in box office. With a 10 million USD production budget, it grossed 77 million worldwide.

How’s the movie? Honestly, I like it. It is quite enjoyable. It is fast paced, scary, with a lot of Hollywood creation added. And it also got some good modern era CG. The acting is good and the new storyline is creative. Ending is quite touching as well. Although not exactly a member of The Conjuring Universe, this movie gives you the same atmosphere as The Conjuring.

But I have 2 complaints.

First, I didn’t understand its poster until I have watched the movie. To me, it just looks like shits were coming out from the mouth of the kid! After watching the movie, I now know that those are actually something called ectoplasm. But I still need to google to find out what exactly ectoplasm is. This is the first time I have heard of this term in my life.

Poster of The Haunting in Connecticut

And the other complaint is, where are the Warrens? The movie is an adaptation of the Warrens case “Snedeker house haunting”. But they dropped the true names of the victims, the real location, added tons of Hollywood creations into it, and kicked away the Warrens! This is also the very reason that lead to the creation of The Conjuring Universe.

Ed Warren’s son-in-law has nominated himself as the technical advisor for the movie. But the idea was rejected by its producer. That made him later turned to James Wan and triggered the birth of The Conjuring Universe 4 years later.

At the time of writing, the Conjuring-verse has not yet adapted the “Snedeker house” case. We do not know how The Conjuring Universe will expand itself or would it re-adapt this case in the future. If you are looking for a movie adaptation of the “Snedeker house haunting”, The Haunting in Connecticut is the only one you can get.

There is a successor movie called The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia. I have also watched that and do not really like it. That movie is not based on a Warrens case and has no relationship with the first movie.

03-005 The Demon Murder Case from 1983

03-005
The Demon Murder Case from 1983

I continue my study on movies based on Warren cases, as suggested by this article.

Movies That Are (Technically) Part of the Conjuring Universe -

https://halloweenyearround.wordpress.com/2020/08/10/movies-that-are-technically-part-of-the-conjuring-universe/

In the previous post, I talked about the 1991 TV movie The Haunted, which is inspired by the “Smurl family haunting”. The movie is low budget and the atmosphere is very difference from that of The Conjuring movies. But Warrens appeared in it. It may not be fit alongside with other movies of The Conjuring Universe well, but it is a Warrens movie in no doubt.

The Demon Murder Case

Today, I would like to look into another movie on the list, the 1983 TV movie The Demon Murder Case. This movie is based on the “Trail of Arne Cheyenne Johnson”, the same base of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. And it would mostly likely being the first movie ever produced to feature the Warrens, err, sort of.

The movie is produced by two companies, Len Steckler Productions & Dick Clark Productions. It has never reached the big screen. The movie is aired by NBC in US and went direct-to-video in other countries. As mentioned in the article, it is difficult to get a copy of the movie. However, same as The Haunted, it can be viewed on YouTube. I put it here so that everyone can watch.

So, how’s the movie?

The first complaint would probably from the video quality. If you have watched The Haunted, you will find the resolution of the YouTube upload nowhere near 4K. Frankly, its quality is not even up to DVD standard. But picture quality of The Demon Murder Case on YouTube is even worse. It is a direct conversion from a VHS tape. And the VHS tape is not in good shape either.

Opening scene of the movie

About the movie itself, I found a review.

WICKED WEDNESDAY: THE DEMON MURDER CASE (1983) -

https://americanoflondon.com/2021/03/31/wicked-wednesday-the-demon-murder-case-1983/

I do not 100% agree on her points. The movie is far from good but is not that bad. The running time is 93 mins and the boring trail part only takes up a mere 20 mins, being 5 mins at the beginning and 15 mins at the end. The other 70 mins of the movie run well. For sure, you cannot compare this early 80s TV movie with any present day blockbusters. Quality of the VHS conversion also flattened one’s appetite. But I would give the movie an overall passing grade.

Another blogger gives a fairer overview.

GRANDSON OF MADE FOR TV MOVIE WEEK: The Demon Murder Case (1983) -

https://bandsaboutmovies.com/2018/09/30/grandson-of-made-for-tv-movie-week-the-demon-murder-case-1983/

Okay, does this movie fit with other movies in The Conjuring-verse? I would say, not really. First, the movie did not explain the origins of the demon. And the demonic problem was not solved at the end of the movie. Their house is still haunted. And most importantly, they changed the names of all the people in the “Trail of Arne Cheyenne Johnson”. Ed and Lorraine became Guy and Charlotte Harris inside!

Ed and Lorraine Warren?

No, they are the Harris. Oops!

Am I recommending it?

Luckily, the “Trail of Arne Cheyenne Johnson” is now dramatized in the official The Conjuring Universe movie The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. So, only if you are very sincere with the Warrens and also get some time to kill, you may try to watch The Demon Murder Case. It is available free anyway. Otherwise, you can just skip this one.

03-004 The Haunted, The Conjuring 3.5?

03-004
The Haunted, The Conjuring 3.5?

The real life demonologist couple Ed and Lorraine Warren are the core of the horror movie franchise The Conjuring Universe. The Warrens have investigated in more than a thousand of paranormal cases throughout their career. Any of their cases can be elaborated into a movie. Develop a franchise basing on real cases means there would never be running out of ideas in expanding The Conjuring-verse.

Apart from basing on real cases, The Conjuring Universe also has something unique.

First, the franchise is very young. Compare to other movie franchises like Alien, A nightmare in the Elm Street, or James Bond, The Conjuring Universe is less than a decade old. With the first movie only came out in 2013, all movies were filmed using almost the latest technology. Apart from the first 2 movies, The Conjuring and Annabelle, which were still using 35mm negative in filming, all the following movies switched completely to digital camera. Also, CG was already quite advance in 2013. One may find difficult to convince oneself that the 1979 Alien actually came after the 2017 Alien: Covenant. But putting the 2013 The Conjuring after the 2018 The Nun wouldn’t cause much trouble.

Second, the franchise is also under tight control. The directors and story writers are always the same group of people. Same production companies always reappear, “New Line”, “The Safran” and “Atomic Monster”. A tight control can minimize contradictions between movies.

All these make the franchise looks awesome from appearance. But this also means less fun. New Line did added some salt to it. 5 short films were officially embraced through a competition. And with the release of the limited comics series The Conjuring: The Lover,  the franchise has stretched its hand to the printing media. But apart from those, it seems there are nothing else.

As the Warrens are real people and their cases are claimed to be real, one can make movies based on their cases without conflicting any copyright. Just to make it clear, the Annabelle story is a creation by The Conjuring team and is copyrighted. But the Annabelle doll is a real figure. You cannot copy the Annabelle storyline. But you can create your own movie featuring the Annabelle doll, alongside with your own storyline.

And indeed, many Warrens’ cases were adapted on the screen decades ago.

Movies That Are (Technically) Part of the Conjuring Universe -

https://halloweenyearround.wordpress.com/2020/08/10/movies-that-are-technically-part-of-the-conjuring-universe/

So, let us move away from The Conjuring Universe and explore somewhere else.

The Haunted, an adaptation of the “Smurl haunting”

The one that I want to talk about first is the 1991 The Haunted, a low-budget American “made-for-TV film”. It is difficult to find a copy of the movie but fortunately, the movie is available on YouTube. Let us watch it first.

This article gives a detailed analysis on this movie.

The Lost Conjuring Movie: 1991’s The Haunted -

https://www.comingsoon.net/movies/features/879577-the-lost-conjuring-movie-1991s-the-haunted

How do you feel about it? Atmosphere is very difference from those of the Conjuring-verse movies, for sure. And the 4:3 aspect ratio keeps reminding me that the movie has never made its way to the big screen.

The timeline of this movie is set in year 1986, 5 years after The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. You really can’t consider this movie as a part of The Conjuring Universe and call it “The Conjuring 3.5”. But still, Ed and Lorraine appeared in it. It is a “Warren movie” in no doubt!

Remember that the Wikipedia has only listed out 9 notable investigations of the Warrens? The Conjuring Universe has already dramatized 5 of them. And this TV movie dramatized the 6th, the “Smurl haunting”.

How about the remaining 3 cases? Stay tuned. I will talk about them.

03-003 The Conjuring: The Lover

03-003
The Conjuring: The Lover

As a fan of the Warrens and The Conjuring Universe, I have recently read the DC comic The Conjuring: The Lover. The comic series is officially a part of the universe. Reading it is sort of my completion on the franchise. So, I am going to write something about this comic series before moving onto other topics of the Warrens.

Artwork of The Conjuring: The Lover

Is The Conjuring: The Lover any good? What is it about? How well does it connect to the other parts of the franchise? Where should it be placed in the Conjuring-verse timeline? Are the Warrens there? And most importantly, for non-comic fans, is this series worth reading? Is there anything to miss if I don’t read it? I will answer all these questions one by one.

Before moving on, I need to include a little spoiler warning as it is impossible not to discuss the content of the comics and also the movie The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. But I will only spoil a little bit of it.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Is “The Conjuring: The Lover” any good?

Being the first non-screen present of the universe, the comic series broaden its followers’ eyesight. I am not a great fan of Western comics. I grew up with Japanese comics, Doraemon, Dragon Ball Z, etc. Certainly, Western comics are in a totally different style from Japanese comics. But I quite like The Conjuring: The Lover. The artworks are good and the storyline is also good. It is easy to follow, not much of guessing around when reading. Yes, it is good.

Cover of Issue 1

What is it about?

The Conjuring: The Lover is a limited series published on 5 different issues. The first issue published 3 days before the screening of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. The film was theatrically released in the United States on June 4, 2021 and the comics was published on the first of June. Remaining issues published on the first Tuesday of the following months and the story ended on Issue 5, which is published on October 5, 2021.

Story took place in 1981 in Danvers. It is a story about a colleague student called Jessica. At the beginning of the story, the girl was having a hard time. She had bad grades in the last semester and needed to catch up. Her mum expected her a lot. To make things even worse, her best friend and lover, Katie Lincoln, was taking a year off and not to be with her.

That is all I want to spoil. If you want to know more, read the comics.

Cover of Issue 2

How well does it connect to the other parts of the franchise?

Now, it is time to spoil the movie. If you have watched The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, the name Katie Lincoln would sound familiar. Yes, she is murdered in the movie by being stabbed 22 times. And in her friend Jessica’s home, police found a totem. And movie said Jessica was missing. This is how the comics was connected to the movie. It gives the details of Katie’s murder.

If The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is “Conjuring 3”, then The Conjuring: The Lover is “Conjuring 2.9”. The comics is a prequel to the movie.

Cover of Issue 3

Where should it be placed in the Conjuring-verse timeline?

The story took place in year 1981, months before the story of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. So it should be placed like this in the Conjuring-verse timeline:

  1. The Nun
  2. Annabelle: Creation
  3. The Nun 2
  4. Annabelle
  5. The Conjuring
  6. Annabelle Comes Home
  7. The Curse of La Llorona
  8. The Conjuring 2
  9. The Conjuring: The Lover
  10. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

I also put the upcoming movie The Nun 2 in the timeline for reference.

Cover of Issue 4

Are the Warrens there?

Not exactly. The couple did not appear anywhere in the comics but their names were mentioned on one of the page in Issue 3.

The only place you can find the Warrens

Is this series worth reading?

Except you really hate comics, I would say yes. Just like other spin-off movies in the franchise, the comics enrich the story line. For sure, the stories are all Hollywood creation and are not related to any true case investigated by the Warrens.

Another thing I need to mention is, the story was spread across 5 issues of comics. And each issue is around 30 pages. But only half of the pages are about the story of Jessica. The other half are backup stories, which explore the cursed artifacts in the Warren's basement museum. Those backup stories serve as an important part to enrich The Conjuring Universe.

Cover of Issue 5

Is there anything to miss if I don’t read it?

The comics gives some extra information to the franchise. But you will still be able to understand the movie without reading it. The last issue of The Conjuring: The Lover was published months after the release of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. And people have no problem understanding the movie.

This is all I want to say about The Conjuring: The Lover. I recommend it. The comics are available from Amazon. Please respect the writer and buy a real copy. Don’t download.

On the next post, I will talk about something else, something other than The Conjuring Universe but about the Warrens.

Where to buy?

Amazon.

03-002 The Conjuring-verse

03-002
The Conjuring-verse

Starting from the 2013, James Wan’s The Conjuring Universe, a.k.a. The Conjuring-verse, started expanding and become one of the most famous horror movie franchise. Now there are 8 movies, with the 9th under filming and the 10th under development. In addition, there are 5 short films and a comic book series also fall into this universe. There are also plans of bringing the Conjuring-verse to the small screen.

The Conjuring Universe

We all know that The Conjuring-verse is about Ed & Lorraine Warren. And many attribute it to James Wan. But this is only a causal way of saying and is far from accurate.

The Conjuring Universe vs. The Warrens

The Conjuring-verse is a dramatization of the real-life cases of Ed & Lorraine Warren. For sure, the Warrens is the core of the franchise but the Conjuring-verse goes much further than that. For example, The Curse of La Llorona is based on the Latin American folklore, which is nothing related to the Warrens. Besides, as in many other so-called “movies based on real cases”, a huge amount of Hollywood creation has been added to the franchise. Which means the stories told by the movies can be very far away from the actual cases.

Furthermore, Ed & Lorraine Warren claimed they have involved in around 10,000 cases throughout their career. The Conjuring-verse has only adapted a few of them, mainly the most famous ones. There are still plenty of cases not being adapted by The Conjuring-verse.

Finally, the franchise belongs to New Line Cinema, not James Wan. James only heavily involved in it. He is not the owner.

In short, the Warrens is only a (major) part of the franchise and the franchise is only a (minor) part of the Warrens. This chapter is about the Warrens. But because The Conjuring-verse is at present the biggest media franchise of the Warrens, I will discuss it as a whole.

The Conjuring Universe timeline

I recommend to watch the 8 movies in chronical order. Yes, it is different from their release order. To watch them chronically, you should follow this order:

  1. The Nun
  2. Annabelle: Creation
  3. Annabelle
  4. The Conjuring
  5. Annabelle Comes Home
  6. The Curse of La Llorona
  7. The Conjuring 2
  8. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

Or, if you are serious on chronology, you can follow the way illustrated by these links to watch the movies:

All 8 movies are connected. Also watch the shorts. Technically, they are parts of the universe although filmed by amateurs. The shorts are available on YouTube and I put links below. It only takes you 10 minutes to watch.

The Nurse

The Confession

What’s wrong with mum?

Blund's Lullaby

Innocent Souls

How many Warren cases are covered by The Conjuring Universe?

The 8 movies covered 5 of the Warren cases, as follow:

  • Annabelle (Annabelle: Creation, Annabelle, Annabelle Comes Home)
  • Perron family (The Conjuring)
  • Amityville (The Conjuring 2)
  • Enfield poltergeist (The Conjuring 2)
  • Arne Johnson (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It)

Compare to the total number of 10,000 claimed cases, this seems to be a small number. But all these cases are the most famous ones. Wikipedia only listed out 9 notable investigations. This franchise covered more than 50% of them already.

03-001 Why the Warrens?

03-001
Why the Warrens?

The first 2 chapters of my blog are about desktop games. You may expect the coming chapters will be about other types of family games, such as board games etc. Why suddenly changed to a totally unrelated topic?

“My Multi-culture Universe” is a website about culture. And culture involves many things. I won’t just talk about family topics here.

I am a traveler. I love travel. Despite being 200lbs in weight and having 2 kids and an old mum to take care, I am quite an adventurer. I remember how I nominated myself for a business trip to Lahore, Pakistan some 5 years ago. Pakistan always falls into the category of not-to-go in government travel warning. None of my other colleagues dared going there. And my boss was surprised to see a volunteer popped up. The trip ended up to be a pleasure one. (I will write a post about that trip if time permits.)

Ever since the outbreak of COVID-19, the city I live, Hongkong, has technically been locked down for more than 2 years. At the time of writing, most countries in the world have already lifted their travel restrictions and reopened their border. Hongkong, however, is still requiring a 7 day quarantine for visitors. And the government has just started a serious discussion on how to lower this further down to 5 or 3 days. Although we still go to work and school as normal, everyone are bounded in this small city because of the quarantine restriction. As an adventurer, this keeps my heart burning.

I found a way out – to dig myself into different movie franchises, especially horrors. Horror movies can give people a stronger sense of adventure.

To get an easy start, I picked James Wan’s The Conjuring Universe.

James Wan

Why not others but James Wan?

I started to like this James Wan guy after watching Insidious in a theater some 10 years ago. But I am never a fan of him. Only until recently, Insidious is still the only James Wan movie I have ever watched. It was a web podcast that triggered all my interest in the Warrens. The podcast talks about many different strange phenomenon. In one of the episodes, it talked about James Wan, The Conjuring Universe, Ed & Lorraine Warren and cases that they have involved. A horror movie franchise that based on real cases? How interesting. This started my research on the Warrens.

In the next few posts, I will start sharing all interesting things I have found out during my research. I will start from James Wan’s The Conjuring Universe first and go further from there. So, watch out! Valak is behind you!

03-000 The Warrens

03-000
The Warrens

The third chapter is about The Warrens. Ed and Lorraine Warren were an American couple who worked as paranormal investigators. Edward was a self-proclaim demonologist and his wife Lorraine acted as a light trance medium. The couple worked closely with each other. They claimed to have investigated well over 10,000 cases during their career.

The Warrens are one of my interested topics. I will share my research on this couple, mainly on the media adaptations of their involved paranormal cases.

02-012 Liar’s Dice

02-012
Liar’s Dice

Previously, I have introduced the traditional “street game” of Mexico, the Lotería. I've also written another post for the traditional “street game” of my place, the Hoo-Hey-How (Fish Prawn Crab). Today, I am going to talk about a third one, the Liar’s Dice.

Liar’s Dice is a public domain game that has a long history. The game is also called Dudo, Perudo, Cacho, Pico, Cachito or Dadinho, depends on where you live. In Hong Kong, people simply call it Liar’s Dice. Board Game Geek said it was originated from South America, dated back to 1800 or even earlier.

The game became popular (again) after the release of Hollywood movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest in 2006. Since then, we saw many manufacturers start selling sets of Liar’s Dice or Pirate Dice game set. Some of those are nicely made. But Liar’s Dice was already a popular game in Hong Kong long before Jack Sparrow.

I remember when I was in my teenage, I got a part time job in a pub and I already saw people playing Liar’s Dice. The time was around early 90s. Liar’s Dice at least has a history in my city that can trace back to that time at least.

Although many game manufacturers advertise Liar’s Dice as a fun family game, it is more a drinking game here. There are dice cups and dice in almost any pubs. You do not need to bring anything. The pubs provide the equipment. Just grab some dice and cups from the bar table and you can start playing. Don’t worry. They won’t charge you extra for that.

Same as other traditional games like Yacht or Farkle, some people gave it a twist, rebranded it and claimed it under themselves. Game designer Richard Borg rebranded this game in 1986 and claimed as his own. His game, “Call My Bluff”, won the 1993 Spiel des Jahres and Deutscher Spiele Preis awards. Though, Borg said his game was developed from Liar’s Poker rather than Liar’s Dice and it provides some unique gameplays that the original Liar’s Dice does not give.

Liar's Dice

The Liar’s Dice pack I got is called “Gambling set”. Liar’s Dice is only one of the games included in the pack. As what I said, pubs provide dice and dice cups. People buy this pack is for playing the game at home.

The backside of the "Gambling set" tells you how the betting mats look like.

Same as “Fish Prawn Crab”, you cannot find this in Toy’s “Я” us or any board game stores. You can find this in some stationary shops here. But mainly, “gambling set” is sold at houseware stores. Yes, the place where you can find dishes, light bulbs, USB cables and saucers etc. I don’t know. Don’t ask me why. I just know where to find them.

2 dice cups, 10 standard Chinese dice and 3 Hoo-Hey-How dice.
But one of the die is wrong!

Compositions are very basic. It got 10 standard d6 Chinese dice, 3 specialty marked Hoo-Hey-How dice, 2 dice cups, a pack of playing cards in bridge size and 2 double sided betting mats. Betting mats are for Hoo-Hey-How, Sic Bo, Baccarat and Blackjack.

A standard deck of playing cards is included

The pack is very local and traditional. Quality is not good though. As you can see from the photo, they have even given me a wrong die for Hoo-Hey-How. And the pack is only enough for 2 players. If you got a big party, buy more packs. Also, there are no instructions for any of the games. They assume everyone knows how to play! But what can you expect for a pack that just costs 40 HKD, which is just a bit more than 5 USD? The components inside the pack are enough for playing many games and able to give you hours of (gambling) fun.

Betting mats for Baccarat and Blackjack

If you want to play some dice games with friends but do not have any dice on hand, buying a dedicated Liar’s Dice set is worth considering. A Liar’s Dice set selling on Amazon normally comes with at least 20 dice. Those would be also enough for playing many other traditional dice games, such as Farkle, Yacht, or Yahtzee.

Some Liar’s Dice sets also come with a mat and an additional die in other colour for keeping track of the bid. In some versions of Liar’s Dice, one or six stands for wild. And the corresponding face of the dice are also marked differently, normally a star is replacing the number. But buying a dedicated Liar’s Dice set is not a must. As you can see, the pack I got only comes with standard dice, and no mat. And we are happy with this.

Do I play Liar’s dice with my kids?

Not really. Although it is a fun game and suitable for both adults and kids, Liar’s dice is a popular pub game here. Maybe it is okay to play with your kids in your country. But I would better not mentioning this game in front of my kids. They will learn this from someone else when they grow up, I am sure. A 7 years old kid is just too young to learn any “adult” games.
